Description

Jesmonite® AC730 is a fast-setting composite material composed of a cementitious base modified with an acrylic polymer.

The 8 pre-tinted bases are formulated with a subtle blend of aggregates and decorative pigments to faithfully reproduce the appearance of natural stone.

Designed to meet the needs of craftsmen and designers, Jesmonite® AC730 is the new ecological alternative to traditional concrete.

The alkali-free material eliminates the risk of efflorescence associated with Portland cements, offering a more effective and aesthetically pleasing alternative.

Jesmonite® AC730 is particularly suitable for casting small decorative elements or molding decorative and architectural parts reinforced with quadriaxial fiberglass. Its high weather resistance also makes it an excellent choice for the creation of statues and garden ornaments.

Implementation

    1. How much do I need?

Pouring mixture: 2000 gr to fill 1 volume of 1 liter.

Laminating mix: 1m² will consume 2 kg per 1 mm coat.

    1. Mixing ratio by weight

    Liquid 1: Base 5

Ex: 100 gr of liquid for 500 gr of powder.

    1. Mix

Using a FLAT SPATula or the Jesmonite “High Shear” mixer, slowly add the powder to the liquid while mixing at low speed.

When you have finished pouring in the powder, gradually increase the speed (1000 rpm) and mix for a further 30 – 45 seconds, until the mixture is smooth, fluid and lump-free.

DO NOT USE WHISKS AND MIXERS INTENDED FOR COOKING.

    1. Filling a mold

Pour a small amount of the mixture into the mould and brush all accessible surfaces with jesmonite. If access is difficult, rotate the mold so that the mixture spreads over the entire surface.

Then fill the rest of the mould.

Lightly tapping the mold may help air to escape.

    1. OR Fiberglass-reinforced laminate

Jesmonite AC730 can be used with quadriaxial fiberglass reinforcements to create laminated panels that optimize strength-to-weight ratio.

To achieve this, first weigh the required mixes and cut the fibreglass reinforcement strips to the appropriate dimensions for the mould before mixing Jesmonite.

You’ll need around 2 kg per square meter per mm of laminate thickness. In general, laminates are 5 to 6 mm thick, giving a panel or structure that will weigh around 12 kg/m2.

Apply a 1-2 mm protective layer of Jesmonite (gelcoat) to the mold using a brush or spray gun. Allow this mixture to stand until dry to the touch, but not completely dry.

Prepare a second mixture of Jesmonite and apply a thin layer to moisten the previous layer. Spread the first layer of quadriaxial fiberglass reinforcement over the freshly placed mixture.

To ensure that the entire surface is thoroughly impregnated with the material, pour an additional quantity onto the fiberglass reinforcement and spread the Jesmonite evenly over the entire surface using a brush, spatula or compaction roller.

Then set some of the mixture aside, retaining just enough to moisten the second layer of quadriaxial fiberglass reinforcement. Add 3 to 5% by weight of 13 mm chopped fiberglass to the mixture set aside and stir with an agitator (do not use the high-shear mixing blade, as this could shred the chopped fiberglass). Pour this mixture into the mold using a brush to create an even layer of 3 to 5 mm.

Finally, apply the second and last piece of quadriaxial fiberglass reinforcement and spread the rest of the second mixture over it until the fiberglass is completely impregnated.

    1. Demolding

Demolding can take place +/- 2 hours after casting.

    1. Hardening

Jesmonite AC730 achieves over 90% of its maximum adhesion within the first 24 hours. Laminated and molded objects should be stored in a warm, dry place during this period. They should be placed on shelves that allow air to circulate, and stored in such a way that the panels cannot “slip” or bend under their own weight.

    1. Surface finish

Jesmonite® AC730 is designed to give a stone finish. This is achieved by acid blasting or shot blasting.

The product can only be acid-etched after a minimum drying time of 24 hours.

An acid such as hydrochloric acid will act to a greater or lesser degree for 1 to 4 minutes. The gentle method with white vinegar requires a room to be immersed for at least an hour.

The more the surface is in contact with the acid, the rougher the result will be. When you’re satisfied with the grain size, rinse thoroughly with clean water to remove the acid, then dab the surface dry with a clean, dry cloth.

TIP: Don’t rinse directly into the sink, use a bucket.

    1. Protection and sealing

Jesmonite is not liquid-tight, so it must be treated with a suitable product.

Use flexiguard sealer to provide natural protection for your Jesmonite. Please note that a sealer is only a temporary repellent; a pore filler only offers effective protection in the event of brief contact with a damp body, and is not suitable for objects in continuous contact with wax or water.

Use Colorfresh (gloss) or Colortec (matt) varnishes to seal your creations. This VOC-free varnish offers transparent, long-lasting protection.

For effective protection, apply with a brush. Foams and foam brushes are STRONGLY NOT RECOMMENDED.

    1. Cleaning

Clean work tools with water before the resin dries completely.

Pre-wash your accessories in a separate bucket to avoid clogging your pipes.

Additives

Retarder (retarder) is added to the liquid to extend the mixture’s pot life. Mixing ratio: add 2 gr to 8 gr per kilo of liquid. A test is recommended, as temperature and volume of the mixture can play a significant role.

Thixotropic (thickener) is added to the mixture (A+B) to adjust its texture. A 1 to 3 mm thick layer of Jesmonite can then be applied without running off the surface of the mold. Mixing ratio: Add 2g to 6g per kilo of Jesmonite powder+liquid mixture.

Flexiguard Sealer (is an effective natural repellent for fleeting encounters with damp bodies. It is applied to a dry surface and provides invisible protection for Jesmonite AC730/AC84 composites.

Penetrating Sealer provides long-lasting protection for the AC730/AC84 against stains, water and dust.

The Colortec (matt varnish) is applied to a dry surface to give a matt, waterproof finish to Jesmonite AC100/AC730/AC84 composite.

The Colorfresh (gloss varnish) is applied to a dry surface to give a glossy, waterproof finish to Jesmonite AC100/AC730/AC84 composite.

Quadriaxial fiber (reinforcement) is a glass fabric used in laminating processes to produce panels.

PVA (reinforcing) fibers are synthetic polyvinyl alcohol fibers particularly well-suited to cement-based materials.

Chopped fiber 6 mm chopped fibers add strength to thin-section castings, and act as a filler to aid lamination. A shorter length allows better dispersion in the mix.

12 mm chopped fibers provide added strength to thin-section castings, and act as a filler to aid lamination. Longer lengths offer greater tensile strength.

Jesmonite Calculator

To calculate the quantities and proportions of Jesmonite you’ll need, first select the relevant range. Then specify whether you are calculating on the basis of a mold or a casting. If you’re calculating on a mold basis, place the mold on a scale, fill it with water and enter the quantity in the calculator. If you’re calculating according to a cast part, weigh the part and enter the information into the calculator. This will give you the quantity of liquid and powder needed to make your part.
